Woof Woof: Uncle Matty's Guide to Dog Training offers a friendly and funny approach to raising a dog. Host Matthew Margolies speaks with humor, warmth, and authority when talking both to his pupil dogs and to his audience. He does scold some of his example pet owners, mostly for not being diligent enough about enforcing doggie boundaries and rules. Woof Woof presents several scenarios familiar to a dog owner, including selecting a dog at a breeder or the pet shelter, teaching sit-stay-heel, and generally having more control over Fido when out walking him. He stresses the aphorism that it is not the breed that is vicious or willful, but the treatment of the dog that determines behavior. Margolies's philosophy is that "love, praise, and affection" and a good leash will get one far in gently enforcing an owner's control. He demonstrates in some almost-too-good-to-be-true situations in which a playful and undisciplined puppy completely submits to sit-stay, even when his real owner calls to him from across the room in an attempt to distract him. Another demonstration has Margolies taming an aggressive pit bull by speaking gently to the dog while distracting him with a lesson in "heel-sit." The video includes discussion on behavior problems, not just solving them, but really getting to the root of them, and then proceeding from there. Despite the thorough puppy selection (ways to ascertain new puppy and dog personality), and basic training and leash-holding technique demonstrations, there is no "chapter" or demonstration on house-training methods when bringing that new pet home. This might have been more useful, especially considering the time the video devotes to selecting a new pet. Overall, the video presents basic training principles in a positive and "team" approach to working with a dog. Thankfully, Margolies is not above baby talk, either. It is nice to see an authority in dog training still cannot resist a cute pooch. --Gilia Angell

1 out of 5 stars will NEVER listen to or watch this guy again   April 3, 2004

I wish there were a ZERO star option for reviews.

Up front, I will admit I never read this or any other of Matthew Margolis's books. I watched his show on PBS sever times before calling him.

I had a very bad experience with Mr. Margolis over the phone. I called him for advice/help when my dog bit my friend. Margolis told me I needed to send my dog to California (from the Midwest) for "reconditioning". He offered no other alternatives when I asked what else I could do.

When I explained that I simply couldn't just fork over $600 for his "reconditioning" classes plus the cost to ship my dog there, he got agitated and began berating me. He even said my dog was going to probably "rip off" my mother's face next. Obviously he was trying to scare me into sending my dog and money to California.

I told him I'd find someone in Chicago to help me and he said "Good luck because I doubt you will." By the time I got off the phone (after 5 minutes of questions regarding the dog's background and 15 minutes of blatent verbal abuse), I was crying (believe me, I don't cry easily). My co-workers that were standing in my office told me they could hear him yelling at me through the phone receiver.

I found a great Pet Behaviorist (Dr. Robert Andrysco) through my vet and my dog is doing very well.

I am not saying Margolis's books don't work because I don't know. Obviously, by looking at the other reviewers they seem to help some people. I'm just saying I will NEVER support this so-called trainer by buying or suggesting his products to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars The Dog can stay!!!   July 23, 2003

I took a leap of faith and boy am I glad we did. The tapes were easy and fun to watch; but more important Uncle Matty was clear as to how to handle a puppy. We were at the point where it was getting really hard to love our pup, she was nipping, barking and jumping. Just as in the video, after a few correction we gained control. Thank you Uncle Matty, your tape should be required viewing for all puppy parents. It really works...

We sent our dog which had aggression to other dogs to Mr. Margolis. After a BUNCH of money and 6 weeks we got our dog back. He would cower at the sight of another dog and started attacking people! We used a muzzle, hired a dog behaviorist, worked with the dog for about a year, ect. but after continued intense aggresstion towards people we had to give the dog up.

5 out of 5 stars Oh how I wish this video were available in the UK!   July 3, 2002

I've become a great fan of Mr Margolis through his programmes on Animal Planet (shown here in the UK). Having just adopted a boisterous six month old German Shepherd pup, I was very keen to buy his videos but they are not available in UK format! I am so sad :-((

If you wish to maintain a firm but very loving approach to your dog(s) then this is the video for you.

5 out of 5 stars Uncle Matty's Wolf! Wolf! Video is an excellent video   January 8, 2000

Not only does "Uncle Matty" give a lot of great advice about dog training, it's incredible to watch him in action training dogs in minutes. Reading books are helpful, but to see the techniques,... and see them work, is invaluable. If you follow his advice and are consistent, you too can train even a difficult dog. If you have a dog and are having problems with it going to the bathroom in the house, biting, etc., THEN BUY THIS VIDEO! Please, don't get rid of the dog,... it's YOU, NOT THE DOG. UNCLE MATTY IS THE BEST!
