Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This user-friendly and engaging book describes a six-week program to get people and dogs off on the right paw. Inside the covers are clear descriptions of humane and scientifically-based methods to teach basic exercises including sit, down, come, heel, stay and no jumping up. As importantly, the book emphasizes how to make training fun for those at both ends of the leash, and how to ensure reliable responses while still being your dog's best friend. Also included are trouble-shooting tips for what to do when your dog hasn't read the training books and doesn't respond as expected. Equally useful as an adjunct to training classes or for people who are "home schooling", Family Friendly Dog Training will help you connect with your best friend in a way that will enrich your relationship for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful   May 30, 2008
I think all the ideas in this book are in The Other End of the Leash (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) but I liked the ability to quickly reference with this book. The tradeoff is that there isn't a great deal of detail. I do recommend it to anyone with an Aussie, Border Collie or similar smart puppy.

3 out of 5 stars Good book but not complete   March 8, 2008

I am not a professional dog trainer, but bought this book to help me work with some specific puppy training problems, like him taking the leash in his mouth and "tugging" with it and some "mounting" behavior, but this book is more about generally getting your puppy to "sit", and "come" and how to play fetch etc. which other books cover as well. Try "The Puppy Whisperer by Paul Owens and Terence Cranendonk" or "Puppy Perfect" by Sarah Hodgson instead.

5 out of 5 stars Great Training Book   December 5, 2007

I have read many books on training and Patricia McConnell's Six week program is great...One chapter a week and goals/practice to reach each week...I would highly recommend this book...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent general training book.   July 7, 2007

Patricia McConnell knows dogs. This is an excellent training guide for those who are intent on training their dogs themselves without benefit of a good class (or who can't find a decent class to attend), and it's also a great adjunct for those who are working with a trainer.

The book gives you an effective, realistic six week lesson plan and timeline, and is behaviorally solid (unlike the theories and methods of some currently trendy TV trainers).

I love Dr. McConnell's books on dog training and philosophy. Like the others, I found this one helpful to give me a sense of what training to be covering with my puppy each week!
